Ernesto Illy quality award
for espresso coffee
In the late 1980s Ernesto Illy, while travelling through the rural areas of Brazil, showed coffee producers that there was a market willing to pay considerably higher prices for a superior quality product. The result was a new lease of life for the entire supply chain and the provision of tools and machines for coffee growers to ensure the success of a new type of product.
In 1991 we decided to offer an official commendation to coffee producers who agreed to adhere to the principles of quality and sustainability. This award would go on to become the most important accolade on offer in the category of coffee quality. Since 2008, the contest has been named the Ernesto Illy Quality Award for Espresso Coffee, in homage to the honorary president of illy.

The Ernesto Illy International Coffee Award, named in memory of the visionary leader of illy and son of the company’s founder, celebrates the work that we have been doing alongside the coffee producers for almost 30 years, in order to offer the world’s finest sustainable coffee.
