A group of women who revolutionised their own small section of the world.
Ever-attentive to social sustainability issues, illy is the executive producer of the documentary “A Small Section of the World”.
Through the Ernesto Illy Foundation, illy also sponsors educational programmes for women in coffee-growing communities, which have been launched thanks to the project.
The film, and the story it narrates, are closely linked to food safety and sustainable production, which are the themes of EXPO 2015.
The film tells the story of a group of brave women from Costa Rica, who decided to fight back against the economic crisis in their small community by growing coffee.
It is a tale of strength and female emancipation. The women of ASOMOBI and their coffee cooperative have created a sustainable model that can inspire everyone.
The documentary was directed by Academy Award winner Lesley Chilcott, and produced by illycaffè.
The singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette, who is closely involved with the story behind the documentary, has co-written the song “The Morning”, together with Costa Rican artist Carlos Tapado Vargas.
All the proceeds from the recording of her performance will be match by the Ernesto Illy Foundation and will go to support an educational programme for women in coffee-growing communities.
Women for EXPO offers a new vision of food and culture for global sustainability, with the belief that women can be the drivers of change.
The project has involved many female writers and artists, but also ordinary workers and businesswomen who day by day are gradually building value and raising awareness for themselves and for others.
One of the objectives of Women in the World of Coffee is to encourage and promote female participation in the coffee industry.
