Born in Beirut to a Palestinian family, Mona Hatoum settled in London in 1975 after civil war broke out in Lebanon. She began her career in mid-1980s with a series of performances and video work, before switching her main focus to installations and sculptures in early 1990s. She delights in engaging spectators by inspiring conflicting emotions of desire and repulsion, fear and fascination.
The new illy Art Collection plays with shapes and colours that evoke the typical motif of the Kefiah, a traditional Arabic head covering, decorated with fishing nets and olive leaves. A stylish reinterpretation that tells a meaningful story of work, sacrifice and human relationships.
