The fruit of the union between photographer Sebastião Salgado and illy, this is the most significant report ever dedicated to the world of coffee. It is based on a shared, common value: sustainable development. For illy, this is a principle of the utmost importance and the approach it has chosen to maintain its unbeatable quality.
At the centre of Salgado’s photographs is the environment, but it is the people, with their looks, gestures and dignity, that really come to the fore.
They are a constant reminder to us of our debt of gratitude to the earth, and to the 25 million families who work with coffee in over 70 countries around the world. Coffee-growers are our closest allies in the extraordinary challenge of producing the finest coffee in the world, with mutual respect and for the benefit of all.
Salgado was born in 1944 in Minas Gerais, Brazil’s coffee-growing region. After university, he moved to Paris and then London, where he worked as an economist for the International Coffee Organization. This interest soon became his path in life. In 1973 he began his career as a photographer, which would lead him to document the lives of Latin American and African farmers and their migrations.
