THE BRAZILIAN ARTIST FELIPE COHEN WINS THE ILLY SUSTAINART PRIZE AT ARCOMADRID 2016
The ninth edition of the prize recognizes the proyect Tiempo Partido” - Kubik gallery (Oporto) - in the #SoloProjects section
Madrid, 25 February 2016. Felipe Cohen, participant artist in the #SoloProjects section with the Kubik gallery, was proclaimed winner of the ninth edition of the illy SustainArt Prize at ARCOmadrid 2016 for his work “Tiempo Perdido”. The prize is endowed with 15.000 euros by illycaffè.
Carlo Bach, artistic director of illycaffè, identified the work of Philip Cohen as a perfect example of irony. The artist uses collages and sculptures to play with optical illusions. His style is characterized by creating materials and optical illusions, inviting the viewer to laugh when he finds them out.
In this ninth edition of the illy SustainArt Prize at ARCOmadrid, the fifth devoted to the #SoloProjects program, the work of Felipe is part of one of the thematic areas represented in the section this year: Art at the Intersection of Time and Subversion by Way of Humor.
The illy SustainArt Prize was established to share the Company’s commitment to sustainable growth with the international art community, and offers opportunities for visibility and exchange to artists from emerging countries.
The illy SustainArt Prize was founded at ARCOmadrid in 2008. That year it went to a young Brazilian artist, Matheus Rocha Pitta. In the second year, 2009, Avinash Veeraraghavan, a young emerging artist from India, won the award.
